Cameo Art - Signs of the Zodiac

Rare finely carved mid Victorian cameo depicting Apollo in the golden chariot of the sun. Apollo is the handsome young god of light, music and poetry, and Patron of the Arts.   He is accompanied by a cherub and is circled by the twelve signs of the zodiac.

The gold mount has tested as 14ct gold, but is not hallmarked.  The brooch measures 8.5cm (3.3 in) wide and 7cm (2.8 in) in height and has a secure clasp.   The shell has a very faint stressline near the chariot's wheel which is only visible when held up to the light.
