Cameo Art - Aurora Goddess of Dawn

Beautiful shell cameo of Aurora goddess of Dawn accompanied by the Genius of Light.  Aurora, dressed in a saffron robe, is scattering flowers onto the earth to usher in the day.

The cameo is very detailed and delicately carved and measures 5.5cm (2.2 inches) in width and 4.5cm (1.8 inches) in height.

The carving is based on the bas-relief carved by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen who worked in Italy from 1797 to 1838.

The cameo has a plain gilt mount which is showing slight signs of tarnish, but this does not detract from the beauty of the carving.  There are two small stresslines above Aurora's head, but no wear to any of the raised sections of the carving.  The T and C clasp is complete, however the C section is bent closed; this could easily be repaired.
