Vauxhall glass is a highly reflective, mirror-like glass which was very fashionable during the 18th century through to the mid nineteenth century. It originated at the Vauxhall Glass Factory in London and came in a variety of vibrant colours inlcuding purple, blue, black, silver, green, orange and red. The most popular colours were green and red.
Naturalistic designs such as butterflies and snowflakes were popular, and the glass was made into a wide range of jewellery from brooches, necklaces, earrings and bracelets through to hair combs and tiaras.
It is believed that Vauxhall glass jewellery was sold at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens (1785-1859), a twelve acre park on the south side of the Thames where wealthy Londoners gathered to promenade, dine, dance and for romantic assignations.
