Brooch - Victorian Amethyst

Beautiful Victorian gold (585 or 14ct) brooch set with three large light purple oval faceted amethysts in a coronet and rope twist mount. 

The brooch measures 4.25cms (1.7 in) in width and is in excellent condition.

The name amethyst means "not drunken" in Greek, and in ancient times amethysts were worn as an amulet against drunkeness.  I am certain that Victorian women did not know this!
