Jewel of Love - Georgian Regard Brooch

Dainty Georgian love token - an acrostic brooch with initial letter of each stone spelling the term of endearment REGARD, i.e. R-ruby, E-emerald, G-garnet, A-amethyst, R-ruby and D-diamond. 

The brooch has a classical Georgian gold cannetille setting and an old T and C clasp. It is circa 1835.

The brooch measures 3cm (1.2 in) by 1cm (0.4 in) and is in wonderful condition for its age.

Jeweller's have been arranging coloured gemstones using the initial letters of each stone to spell terms of endearment since the late eighteenth century.  Other common combinations are L-lapis lazuli, O-opal, V-vermeil, E-emerald for LOVE and D-diamond, E-emerald, A-amethyst, R-ruby, E-emerald, S-sapphire, T-tourmaline for DEAREST.
