Sterling silver Australian War Widows' Guild badge featuring a kookaburra sitting on a branch of a eucalyptus tree. The Guild's founder, Mrs Jessie Vasey and the Hungarian sculptor Andor Meszaros designed the badge, and the first copies were available to members in 1951. The brooch measures 3.5cm (1.4 in) in diameter.
The kookaburra was chosen because it is quintessentially Australian. It is also symbolic, because kookaburras are industrious birds that mate for life, are fearless in the defence of their young and have a unique 'chortling' call to encourage war widows to laugh again (War Widows' Guild of Australia 2007).
The proceeds of this sale will be donated to the War Widows' Guild of Australia NSW Ltd. Donations to the Guild are used to support war widows.
