European Art Nouveau brooch with a classical design of a beautiful woman with long flowing hair, framed by curved stems and poppy flowers.
The brooch is 14ct or 585 gold and is stamped SI, an unidentified makers mark. It measures 3cm (1.2 in) by 2.8cm (1.1 in) and has a secure clasp.
The brooch is based on the work of Gustave Obiols a sculptor and jeweller of Spanish origin, who worked in Paris in the early twentieth century and is well known for his beautiful Art Nouveau belt buckles (see Vivienne Becker's book Art Nouveau Jewellery Plate 138 for a silver belt buckle in an almost identical design).
The brooch is in excellent condition. It lacks the fine detail of Obiols work, but is a genuine Art Nouveau piece and is a likely to be a manufactured copy based on the original design.
